Jatropha Oil has assumed greater significance in various countries as a source of high quality bio diesel. When the fossil fuel resource is deteriorating and the cost also becoming prohibitive coupled with the environmental issues, jatropha oil has been found to be one among the best alternative.

When the jatropha seeds are crushed, we can get the oil which can be blended with the petrol and diesel to run the cars and even a Flight. In fact, the residue after extracting the oil can be used as bio mass feedback to power the electricity plants.

The press cake after crushing and extracting the oil is used as fertilizer also as it contains all the essential nutrients. In country like Myanmar, lots of importance is given for the cultivation of the Jatropha. As confirmed by the researchers at Daimler Chrysler Research, the jatropha oil produced now is able to fulfill the EU norms for the bio diesel quality.

However, the fear that, the extensive cultivation of this crop may result in the reduction of the area under food crop is looming large. This crop consumes more water than thought about earlier. It is proven that, jatropha requires five times more water than that it is consumed by sugarcane and corn per unit. Hence, the research should be oriented towards developing new strains of jatropha that can grow with limited water.
