Guest blog post from Kayley Rishard

When I was fifteen we moved from a little town to Philadelphia and I remember my mother joining the local chapter of the American Associate of University Women. Tuesday nights were her chance to get away from her kids, her work and her stress. She enjoyed the challenges inherent in belonging to such a group and she was clearly happier after attending the meetings.

I always thought the concept was a bit snobby, but I’m starting to come around. That probably has to do with the fact that I’ve just moved to Chicago and started a new job. Finally, a job where I can use both my undergraduate degree and my MBA! So I’ve been contemplating joining the Chicago Chapter of the AAUW. I’m especially interested in the Community Service program as well as the Book Club. In April, they read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell – one of my all-time favorite books. Next month is: Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office by Jen Lancaster. I have to admit that I’m intrigued by the title alone. I signed up for ADT services and I just have to find a gym with a pool before I sign up for the AAUW. I have to say, I’m hoping to make a few friends.
